It’s a great time to be young. Children and teenagers enjoy the freedom to explore exciting opportunities – both social and educational. They may also turn their thoughts to part-time work or full-time holiday work, or they may even think about their career.

One of the wonderful aspects of commercial modelling is that it can be done on a model’s own schedule. This includes children of all ages, and so many of our modelling teenagers and child models can reap the rewards of accepting modelling jobs with us without impacting their school time.
It’s important for children and parents to balance any kind of work with education. A child’s education should never be compromised, and we wouldn’t want any of our younger models to feel their school life has been impacted by extra-curricular activities – as enjoyable as they may be.
Parents want the very best for their children. It’s a natural impulse to care for offspring, to celebrate their successes and commiserate their misfortunes. So, how can children realise their modelling potential without disrupting their school life?

First, parents and children should realise that both can be done. It’s not one or the other. Plenty of parents speak with their children and teenagers and plan a workable schedule to get the school and social / work balance to suit them. Modelling is one of the few accessible jobs that can be enjoyed on a part-time basis, so school-age children can absolutely be involved in brilliant modelling assignments around the country.

Which leads us to the second point. We are a national employment agency, so we’re not restricted by a geographical range (this is a convenient time to remind our models that we introduced a second Models Direct office in London this year).
We actively recommend the best suited models to brands in every corner of the UK, meaning that all models have the best chance to gain work wherever they live. For school goers, this is a massive benefit and helps them to decide whether to accept or decline a booking.

The best way to manage a busy school life with modelling is to be honest and organised. Ask yourself how many modelling days you could reasonably take on. School, homework and school-related activities will undoubtedly be more important for most youngsters, but that doesn’t mean they can’t think ahead and plan a career – or at least holiday work.
We recommend sitting down with a Year Planner. Highlight the days or weekly blocks that you are realistically available for modelling work. If you’re a registered Models Direct model, it’s good to know that any model can decline a job when offered to them, and we understand that some dates are not convenient for some of our models.
And if you haven’t considered family modelling, you should! Family modelling shoots are the perfect way to earn money as a group, whilst travelling and enjoying the experience. We’ve connected hundreds of happy families with brands all across the country, and it remains a viable way for school-age children to experience working in a relaxed and safe environment.
