How to build a standout modelling portfolio

Your modelling portfolio is your own personal showcase – it is a window onto what you as a model can offer.

It is something for clients to peruse and assess as they try to decide who they would like to employ for their very specific assignment.

All models, from adult males and females, right down to children and babies, are given a secure e-portfolio to manage and update if they are successful in joining Models Direct.

It is the responsibility of the model themselves – or their parents – to maintain the e-portfolio and ensure it remains at its absolute best, giving the model the very best possible chance of being selected.

When a client approaches us for a model, it is these e-portfolios that we look through to create a shortlist of those matching requirements.

And it is the e-portfolios that our clients consider when making their final decisions.

So how do you build a standout modelling portfolio?

When starting out in the business, you are likely to have an e-portfolio that displays pictures a friend or relative has taken. This is not a problem but do ensure the images are all sharp, clear, well lit and well framed.

As you undertake modelling work through us or anyone else, you should also add these images or videos to your portfolio and update any relevant information at the same time.

Even if it takes a while for you to secure a modelling assignment, we always advise updating your photographs every few months with your own new pictures.

This not only keeps them looking fresh and seasonal but also means we (and our clients) know the images are recent and accurately reflect the way you look at the moment we are considering them.

Make sure each picture is of a high quality and that you have your eyes open and we can see your face clearly.

Select images carefully, it is not worthwhile having any more than one photograph up there in the same pose and outfit.

Vary the poses and what you are wearing.

We would like to see at least one head and shoulders shot and one full body image.

We would also like to see you in a variety of clothes – evening wear, jeans and t-shirt, summer days at the beach, for example…

Try to let your personality and sense of fun shine out in at least one or two of the pictures.

If you can grab the attention of the viewer without overdoing it, then do.

As well as uploading examples of shots or footage from modelling assignments, you need to remember to update your information.

Tell us about any bookings and also ensure we know all about any other relevant new experience, skills or interests – acting, singing, dancing, riding a motorbike?

You never know what or who a client might be looking for at any given moment.

It seems obvious, but also check your contact information is up to date – there is no point in having an outstanding e-portfolio if we can’t get hold of you.

Finally, think about whether you are especially keen to promote yourself within any particular field of modelling – hands, feet, hair, plus-size or tall, for example.

If so, ensure you have at least one or two images that really highlight these unique selling points.

Remember, the better your e-portfolio is, the more chance you stand of gaining work.

And the more you build and develop your e-portfolio as your modelling experience grows, the more likely it is to help your career head in the direction you would like it to go.
