Understanding the Different Types of Modelling: Which Path Is Right for You?

Welcome, reader! We have another blog for you to learn about the different types of modelling. There’s a lot to learn about and some areas left unexplored which our UK-based modelling agency, Models Direct, will reveal. You might be thinking which one is right for you if you’re thinking about becoming a model. Let’s take a look right here to see what you could potentially do:

High fashion modelling

This has to be the most iconic category of all which is where models exhibit top fashion designers’ apparel. The entry requirements are super strict and competition to bag a space is fierce but if selected, it does attract big salaries.

Editorial modelling

Think Vogue magazine which is filled with supermodels who are selected for high fashion modelling – *this* is editorial modelling. It’s niche and competitive but opens the doors to industry exposure and self-promotion.

Commercial modelling

This category encompasses a more diverse range of models as it has lenient guidelines. Characteristics such as age, height, weight and features are not focused upon with a fine tooth comb. Commercial models enjoy a longer career due to the longevity of the market. You’ll see these models on billboards, TV ads, mags and in the digital world.

Promotional modelling

It’s in the name! This category is all about promoting products or services. Models are given training to pass on essential information to the public. It’s fun, it’s live and it helps models interactively experience the industry.

Fitness modelling

Sculpted to a tee is the world of fitness modelling. It’s another competitive arena but it initiates a lot of opportunities in the health and wellbeing world such as athletic gear, workout equipment and supplements which fitness models can connect with. Again, height restrictions are not applied making it more accessible for those with a petite frame as well as taller gym goers.

Diverse modelling

Everyone is different and agencies are now representing people with diverse backgrounds and abilities.

Plus-size modelling

Breaking the body shape barrier is the plus-size modelling division. Agencies have their criteria set for which size they start plus-size modelling. If you’re around size 14 and above and interested in becoming a model, you can deep dive into plus-size.

Fit modelling

Similar in name to fitness modelling but *completely* different in definition. Being a fit model is literally being a live mannequin for fashion designers. They design and style their clothes on you using your frame to make their designer dreams into reality. You could be standing for quite some time whilst being dressed in different pieces. Being a fit model gives you some time to slow down, and since you’ll be surrounded by industry professionals, you’ll be able to liaise and network with them.

Mature modelling

Unlike high fashion modelling which has a time limit for models usually up to their late twenties, or early thirties, mature modelling doesn’t age out. Anyone over their 40s can become a mature model. What’s even better is that there are no other strict requirements placed on models so everyday people can try them out.

Body parts modelling

Modelling doesn’t have to be a holistic overview of you. You can zoom in to the parts which you feel deserve the camera’s full attention and this is where body parts modelling comes in. Most typically, it’s hands and feet, but it could be your stomach, back, hair or really, anything else! The list is endless.
